Bachelors in Optometry (B.Sc Optometry) affiliated to MUHS

Bachelor’s in Optometry is a 4 years full-time course that provides 3 years of teaching followed by 1-year clinical internship. Students are posted at Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital for training in specialized Eye departments viz. Retina, Glaucoma, Caratact, and other specialities for the entire duration of the course at one of the premier Institutes and Eye hospitals in Mumbai.

The course has integrated- interdisciplinary subjects that cover Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Pathology, Geometrical optics, Visual optics, Ocular diseases, sports vision, Low vision, Binocular Vision, contact lenses, etc.

Skills acquired

The syllabus for B.Sc Optometry aims to prepare as a primary health care professional and to work as an independent Optometrist.

This 4-year undergraduate degree program will enable to become optometrists who can undertake-

  • Correction of Referral error of eye and Rx of glasses.
  • Detection of Ocular diseases.
  • Designing and fitting of contact lenses, aniseikonic lenses, and low vision aids.
  • Diagnosis and orthoptic treatment of strabismus.
  • Primary eye care in schools, colleges, urban slums, rural areas, and occupational optometry in industry.
  • Optometric counseling of patients with partial sight, color blindness, and hereditary vision defects (Visual rehabilitation).

Medium of Instruction

English shall be medium of the instruction for all the subjects of study and for examinations of the course.

Bachelor in Optometry, is a full-time professionally, accredited program, affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Science, Nashik.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The candidate who has passed Higher Secondary (10+2) with 50% marks with Physics, Chemistry, Biology group, for open category and 40% HSC (10+2 course). If sufficient number of eligible candidate are not available then eligibility of HSC (PCB) criteria may be relaxed, subject to the approval from MUHS, Nashik.
  • The candidate has attained the age 17 years as on 31st December of the year of the admission.
  • The candidate has to furnish a certificate of Physical Fitness form registered Medical Practitioner at the time of admission.
  • The preference will be given to candidates who have passed 10th & 12th std. from Maharashtra and also is also a domicile of Maharashtra. If such a candidate is not available, the non- domicile of Maharashtra candidates, will be given consideration and admitted for the course, as mentioned in selection process.
  • 15% of seats Intake capacity will be filled by the institution as Institutional Quota seats
  • 25% of seats of intake capacity will be reserved for constitutional reserve candidates.
  • The Hostel accommodation will not be provided to the admitted students.
  • Rules of Tie breaker HSC (10+2) candidates.
    • Candidate with Higher PCB marks will be preferred.
    • The candidate with higher marks in Biology at HSC will be preferred.
    • If tie persist then candidate with higher marks in Chemistry at HSC will be preferred.
    • If tie persist the older candidate will be preferred.

Note: Admission will be confirmed on payment of annual tuition fee of first year & Authentication of original documents at the time of reporting for counselling.
All students admitted to the institute will be governed by the rules and regulations that are prescribed from time to time.

College Timings

The working hours of college are from 8.30 AM to 4.30 PM. However, during the final year as the students are posted for internship in different speciality clinics and outpatient procedures, the timing will depend on the host clinical schedule.Punctuality and attendance will be considered for evaluations.

Identity card

Each student will be given an identity card, which the students are supposed to wear at all times, while in the campus. Students will not be allowed to enter the college and clinic without their identity card.

Instruments

All the students should, compulsorily, possess a retinoscope and an ophthalmoscope, before the first semester of the 2nd year begins.

Dress code

The college has its own dress code which is a must for all students. Whenever they attend the college and clinic. Since the students, are expected to work , in a professional clinical setting, formal dress code is mandatory.

Applying for leave

Students are advised to give prior information to the college authorities about their leave/ permission, failing which strict disciplinary action will be taken against them. Medical certificate should to be given, acquired from a Registered Medical Practitioner, in the case where leave is taken for more than 2 days duration.

Observership/ OPD

The third and final year students are given a chance to observe and perform community vision screening/eye care awareness creation activities through various scheduled programs.

Holidays

Allotted holidays will be specified in the institution’s calendar. The Principal/Director holds the final authority to declare holiday on any other circumstances. The students are requested to contact the office for further information.

Anti-Ragging and Conduct

The institute has formulated a strict anti-ragging guideline, wherein all students, who have taken admission in the Institute, are required to sign an undertaking to abide by these guidelines. Students, found violating these guidelines are liable to strict disciplinary action, which includes expulsion from the institute and a criminal case will subsequently be lodged against the student, at the police station, as per the directive from the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

Attendance, Conduct and Behaviour towards Peers

The students will not be allowed to appear for the examination unless he/she has attended 80% of the lectures, demonstrations & practicals. The Management has the jurisdiction, to change or modify the rules and regulations, as and when deemed necessary, in order to maintain steadfast excellence in the course.

The management, reserves the right, to take strict disciplinary action, against the students for their misconduct and subordination.
